MY TWO CENTS

3.1 or 3100 you decide

Compare and tell me if they are the same....!
Re: 3.1 or 3100 6cyl gpxss (22/M/Charlotte, NC) 5/18/00 9:20 am
The easiest way to answer is to say the only things the two motors share are the crank, rods, and timing cover. Every other possible part was redesigned and improved upon. They may look similar, they have the same bore/stroke and are both 60º V-6's with iron block/aluminum heads but thats it. The 3100 is a much much stronger motor than the 3.1 and as in the other posts, is SFI instead of MPFI which fires each injector seperatly while MPFI fires 3 at a time. I could list all the differences but ill save the board space. In short, if you have to choose, get the 3100 unless you come upon a turbo 3.1 form a 89-90 Turbo Grand Prix. Ram Air Technology 3 inch exhaust system
After a day at the track with only a cold-air box, 3.4" pulley and u-bend pipe removed, I decided to replace the exhaust. Timeslip's did not improve greatly with the three aforementioned upgrades. My conclusion led me to believe the exhaust was the limiting factor in the pursuit of maximum performance.
Boy was I right! After installing Ram Air Technology's 3" stainless steel cat-back exhaust there was a huge improvement throughout the entire powerband. Not only does it "take-off" harder, it pulls harder all the way! Only one thing, this exhaust is not for the faint-at-heart! This exhaust is substantially louder than the original exhaust. If you've ever been in a late-model Mustang 5.0 with a Flowmaster or Dynomax exhaust then you'll know what I mean. The fairly loud exhaust note is due to the mufflers straight pipe design and larger pipe diameter.
First impressions of the exhaust noise were not looking to good. A lot of interior noise and droning especially at low speeds. Once you are cruising at highway speeds the sound level reduces to level where a conversation with a passenger is much more feasible. The exhaust note is reminiscent of Grand Nationals of yesteryear. After 4 hours of driving, the exhaust "grew" onto me. I began to enjoy the humm of the PulseTech muffler's in symphony with the supercharger whine each time I pressed the five inch plastic lever into the graphite rayon carpet.
Installation time is approximately one hour (most of it was spent aligning the exhaust tips). The exhaust comes packaged neatly into one large box. The mufflers and resonator are made of stainless steel while the rest of the tubing is made of allumunized steel. All necessary hardware is included except for the cat to resonator gasket. The exhaust has an excellent fit and finish. I polished each muffler to a high luster before installing them. The exhaust tips are a pair of beautifully chromed and polished custom made pieces

Dashboards Plus "Real" Carbon Fiber Interior Kit
I found the interior to be too monotone and plain. I decided to install a carbon fiber dash kit to add a high tech look. I chose Dashboards Plus kit since it had more pieces in the kit than the other competitors. After placing the order, it took two weeks to arrive. Well worth waiting for, the kit is "freshly" made for your car. This ensures the 3M adhesive will work at it's best. Each piece is hand polished to a mirror like luster. The carbon fiber has a rich deep texture which "shifts" depending on the lighting. Words can't explain the immediate improvement in interior appearance. I just wish they had made pieces for my sunroof console.
Installation is fairly simple. First trial fit all the pieces for proper fit. Next place all the pieces over the dash, turn the defroster on medium speed and "Hot". This will make the pieces pliable and soft enough to work on curved surfaces (i.e. console cupholder). Using the supplied "adhesion promoter" pad, apply to the dash (of course after cleaning the dash) and trim pieces where the kit is to be installed. Then simply "eyeball" the fit and rub hard after installing. Then sit back and enjoy the view :)

Another Grand Am
LARGE SPOILER not my thing but some do love them!!!!!!!!!!
service tips
J-body-specific tips http://www.execpc.com/~decostc1/
1. Be sure you buy a GM heater core if yours breaks or starts leaking. If you buy an aftermarket one, it will never heat the same.
2. Power seats and other upgraded features will work for any J-body if they come out of a Cadillac Cimarron.
3. An upper strut tower brace can be easily added to any j-body that doesn't have one. After '91 I think upgraded j-bodies came with these braces, so for pre '91's or other newer cars without upgrade packages can use a brace off of a newer one. I am told that the GM part number for this piece is #22576687. I think '94 might be a little different though. A lower strut tower brace can also be added, and the GM part number is 22555480 BRACKET-F. Adding either or both of these will make your car hug the road better and make the car more solid up front.
If buying aftermarket rims, of which there are many, you will need to know that every j-body ever made uses a 5 X 100mm bolt pattern, and the stock offset is 35MM. If you want to find some used rims, you would probably be interested in knowing which cars the wheels will interchange with. Well, here they are: Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep/Eagle/Plymouth: Ø 94+ Neon (5 Lug OEM), 96+ Sebring, 95+ Cirrus, 95+ Stratus, - 94 Shadow, -94 Sundance, -94 Daytona, -94 Breeze, -93 Acclaim, 96+ Caravan (4CYL), 86-95 Voyager, 86-95 Caravan, -88 Laser, Dynasty, 93 New Yorker, Le Baron, TC, Spirit, Acclaim GM: Ø early 80’s - 95 Skylark, -01 Cavalier, -96 Corisica / Beretta, -95 Achieva -01 Sunfire, 85-94 Sunbird, -93 Skyhawk, -98 Grand Am -89 Fiero, -92? Calais, Some early ’80’s A-bodys Saturn:Ø 2000+ LS Wagon, 2000+ LS Sedan Subaru: Ø 90+ Legacy, 93+ Impreza, 95+ Outback Wagon, 97+ Forester Toyota: Ø 86+ Celica GT, 92+ Celica ST, GT Conv, 86-91 Celica GTS, 92+ Celica GTS All Trac, 86-91 Camry, 00+ Celica Volkswagen: Ø 93+ Golf, 93+ Jetta, 92+ Passat, 93+ Corrado, 99+ Jetta, 99+ Golf, 98+ Beetle *The bolt pattern on VW cars will be the same, but the offset may be different
4. If you own a '95 or newer J-body, there is a "power-pulley" that will work on your car that is made by GM. It wasn't designed for this purpose, but it is effective. The GM part number is #24573264. The belt may be purchased at Auto-zone, Pep-Boys, Advanced Auto, etc. Its number is 450K5. A power pulley is also available for the v6 engine through www.ramairtech.com. It is not actually listed for the J-body, but it is the same as the one for the Berretta v6 applications.
5. Contrary to popular belief, Splitfire spark plugs are a rip off, as are Bosch Platinum's. They have been in trouble for false advertising to prove it. If you want a good set of plugs go with Bosch 4+ (never tried these) or AC Delco Rapidfires (I have, and recommend
